Join us for an engaging exploration of risograph printing, a dynamic medium that has gained popularity in Naarm and across the world. Developed in Japan in the 1980s, risograph printing uses soy-based inks and a stencil process to create richly textured and vibrant prints with unique variations.

This panel will feature a handful of Naarm’s risograph community – Ashley from Helio Press, Marc from Glom Press, Zenobia Ahmed and Dennis Grauel. Find out how these printers discovered risograph through various pathways including graphic design and zine culture, and how they found their own machines in unusual places. You’ll hear how they each approach their practice in different ways to publish unique and vibrant books, zines, comics, posters and art prints.

They will discuss the benefits of risograph printing, such as its vivid ink colours, cost efficiency for larger print runs, and sustainable practices due to the use of eco-friendly inks. However, challenges exist, including a limited colour range, a steep learning curve, and the need for regular equipment maintenance.

Despite the obstacles, these risograph printers continue to thrive and innovate, advocating for the medium through various platforms, including workshops and exhibitions. By sharing resources and collaborating with each other, these artists enhance their practices while contributing to a vibrant and dynamic risograph culture, publishing unique works that connect and inspire within the art community.
